Sweet Old Ladies

The amateur theatre is extremely active in Deal this month and The Guild Players open their production of Tabitha at The Kilshawe Theatre on Thursday, 20th March. The Guild Players have a happy knack of choosing the right plays for their strong cast, and this is particularly true of Tabitha.

Who Killed the Cat – and Mrs. Trellington?

The Guild Players introduce several new faces in their production of Tabitha at The Kilshawe Theatre, Deal. There are three performances from Thursday 20th March. It is by Arnold Ridley and Mary Cathcart Borer. Arnold Ridley will be remembered for his smash hit of the 1920’s The Ghost Train and for his success in his last years as one of those in Dad's Army the highly successful BBC TV series. Tabitha was first produced in London in 1956 and while it does not have the impact of The Ghost Train it has a situation that is very topical. It depicts the plight of three genteel old ladies from differing backgrounds who are povery trapped in sub-standard accommodation. They remain resourceful when faced with a rent increase, especially when a Christmas bottle of whiskey bolsters their courage. But when an accident befalls Tabitha the cat and then the grasping landlady, who is to blame? It looks like murder! Can it be the three old ladies , or is it the landlady’s lovely step-daughter? Suspense runs high as the play reaches its climax. The cast is Peter and Christine Jennings, Ray and Mollie Caldecott, Eleanor Bowthorpe, Gill Watson, Wyn Fright, Peter Wood and Ron Heath. The director is Gordon Crier, retired professional, whose first big success was on radio with Arthur Askey in Band Waggon.
