Players Triumph in Difficult Farce

Alan Ayckbourn is this country’s most successful dramatist. Somebody, somewhere is always performing his brilliantly observed plays. But so clever are they, so brittle, they are often death to the amateur. Happily this was not the case last week when The Guild Players presented Bedroom Farce at The Kilshawe Theatre. Performances went beautifully and good audiences went away delighted. The play was the first major production for Gill Watson as a director. Although not flawless she was extremely good, getting the most from a talented cast and finding full expression for each Ayckbourn situation. This was not the easiest of plays to choose from for a directorial debut but Gill Watson coped well. Alex Thomson and Doris Cohen were impeccable as a middle-aged couple who found pleasure in the odd sensation of eating pilchards on toast in bed together. Christopher Sewell was their ineffectual son and gave a great performance of woolly headedness. Sally Newman was the neurotic daughter-in-law. Sally is the most improved actress in the area and this performance was her most satisfying. Shamus Boyle and Sue Watson were suitably light-hearted as the young married couple. A well matched pair who gave the play plenty of zest. Peter Rawlinson and Christine Eyden were the other young couple. Peter confined to bed with a bad back, got a tremendous amount out of his part, no easy matter when only the face is visible except when he fell out of bed with hilarious results. Christine offered a cool and collected lady in the midst of turmoil, and she did it very well. Staging this play is always difficult – three bedrooms on one stage. With the confines of the Kilshawe stage it was precarious, so congratulations go to the set designer, Sid Jones, and his builders, not forgetting lighting man, Nick Tigwell.
