Three Plays for Pleasure

Cast of Three Plays for Pleasure

Team Effort Brought Success

Team effort is not a phrase much used in theatrical circles but it was powerfully obvious in producing success for The Guild Players in Plays for Pleasure at The Kilshawe Theatre, Deal, last week. There were three one-act plays plus a buffet supper, which takes team effort! The meal was the work of Doris Cohen and her helpers and it was complimented by the excellence from the stage to give a perfect evening. The food was good and the plays first-rate. The architect of the entertainment deserves the highest praise. Alex Thomson found three unusual and varied plays and as Director he gained the best of the simple starkness of the first, the allegorical depth of the second and the bitter satire of the third. His casts responded beautifully to his direction. In the first play a quartet of youngsters of the Junior Guild played their contrasting characters with the sureness of well-seasoned performers. Justine Sewell, Melanie Friend, Robert Tarbuck and Andrew Spencer evoked the best from a play often seen in youth drama festivals. In the second play – a piece from Tom Stoppard’s mysticism – Christopher Sewell was nothing short of magnificent. I have never seen him do better. He brought to the character all the power of the unknown quantity. There was good support from Christine Eyden trying to probe the past. Jessica Robinson, Roger Brown, Dorothy Smith and Vanessa Sewell completed the cast. The evening ended on a high note with a clever script by Peter Jones, which uses high drama to ridicule over-rated values. Alex Thomson gave a sound characterisation and Mark Laker revealed increasing talent. Linda Gray, with not much of a part, showed a sound sense of the comic, and Kath Thomson had no more to do but look her elegant self. Such was the success of Plays for Pleasure the formula certainly must be repeated next year!
