The Players come up with a Winner

Capacity audiences for five performances at The Kilshawe Theatre, Deal, last week illustrated the drawing power of The Guild Players at Christmas time. This year’s show was The Jungle Book, a lighthearted adaptation of Kipling’s classic by Gill and Sue Watson, mother and daughter, and both long associated with The Guild Players. Gill Watson also produced and directed and she came up with a winner. The show captured well the essential spirit of Kipling, and this was enhanced by the splendid animal costumes created by Helen Lee, Olive Harlow, Elsie Carty and Ruth Harvery Williams. Their contribution to the overall success of the show cannot be overrated. Gill Watson introduced, here and there, a little of the spirit of pantomime. The youngsters just could not resist shouting instructions to Baloo and Bagheera when they searched for little Mowgli. There was an excellent and effective piece of stagecraft when the dawn patrol of elephants came in through the main door, down the auditorium and onto stage. Nathan Sewell, as Mowgli, was excellent. Christopher Sewell made a very loveable Baloo, and he was well backed up by Jessica Robinson as Bagheera. Lynda Gray was most impressive as Kaa, the python; with Andy Russell making a bold Shere Khan, and Dot Smith loving every minute of being a baddie jackal. There was a melodious interlude with four vultures in close harmony: Sue Watson, Alison Eyden, Alan Eyden and Colin Baldwin introduced a touch of folk music. The cast back-up to the principals was really good: others making a happy contribution, were: Christine Eyden, Bob Marshall, Vanessa Sewell, Emma Gray, Phil Brown, Giff Goldfinch, Justine Sewell, Judy Hambrooke, Paul Chavalier, Abigail Archer, Jane Knight, Dionne Hairsine, Clare Bridgeland, Haley Young, Abigail Archer, Joanne Aherne, Yolanda Crews, Amy Spencer, Joanne Catt, Joshua Sewell, Emma Gray, Andy Spencer, Abigail Draper, Nicholas Gray and Phillip Hambrooke. There were voices off from Glenys Cresswell and Sid Jones and the luminous puppet scene came from Vanessa Sewell, Christine Eyden, Doris Cohen, Sue Watson and Stephanie Walmsley. Full marks to Alison Eyden, who was the most accomplished pianist.
