Old Time Music Hall

Fun was Infectious

Old time music hall is infectious. Where else in the theatre – with the exception of pantomime – can one experience such wonderful and enthusiastic audience participation? The Guild Players presented Old Time Music Hall at The Kilshawe Theatre – in St George’s Hall – last week and three virtually capacity audiences really relished joining in the fun. Gill Watson, who has a long and successful background in local amateur theatre, directed the show. She devised a fast‑moving, colourful and melodic show, which reflected the wonderful traditions of the music halls of long ago, but with a clever and inspired modern approach. As always with The Guild Players it was pleasing to find so many young and talented performers on stage. The value of The Junior Guild to this society is immense. The thing about doing an old time music hall is that it is just as much fun for those on stage as for those in the auditorium. And that delightful sense of fun pervaded this show. The succession of the expected music hall turns were interspersed by a couple of short playlets, both of which made good-humoured fun of the Victorian melodrama. Alex Thomson was the Chairman and was quite as majestic as the portrait of Queen Victoria under which he presided. Claire Middleton was the indispensable pianist and she backed by William Pugh on drums. The faultless cast comprised Doris Cohen, Joanna Devine, Christine Eyden, Linda Gray, Jessica Robinson, Justine Sewell. Vanessa Sewell, Dorothy Smith, Stephanie Walmsley and Sue Watson – (I have in true Victorian tradition, given the ladies first) – Robert Marshall, Andrew Russell, Christopher Sewell, Andrew Spencer, Paul Taylor, Christopher Taylor, Nick Tigwell – who found time to leave the lighting and sound board – and Richard Williamson. The costumes were really marvellous, and were the work of Olive Harlow, Helen Lee, Ruth Harvey‑Williams and Elsie Carty. The costumes caught the essence of the Victorian era to perfection. I hope Old Time Music Hall may become a feature of The Guild Players programme in the years to come. It really is excellent entertainment.
