The Water Babies

Cast of The Water Babies

Colourful Show was Just Right for Christmas

Over the years The Guild Players have built an excellent reputation for Christmas entertainment, which was further enhanced with last weeks production of The Water Babies. A tuneful, colourful show, it delighted all ages and helped raise money for The Royal Marines Relief Fund. The Charles Kingsley classic was adapted for the stage by Willis Hall and it lost nothing in the change. Tom, the young chimney sweep, was delightfully played by Emily Boreham, a talented youngster not yet in her teens but who gave a wonderful performance. Christopher Sewell, as always, was in top form as Grimes and his brother Richard was equally outstanding as Lobster. Dot Smith, another reliable actress, was happily cast in a dual role. A number of performers took two parts and Russell Tomlinson-Patten took three! Gerry Cavell made a likeable Sir John and it was good to see Phyllis Gray back on stage. The large cast was completed by Darren Tazey, Stephanie Walmsley, Nathan Sewell, Chris Towler, Sue Watson, Teresa Orlando, Prue Jamieson, Christine Eyden, Carol Farrant, John Fitzgerald, Amy Sleep, Emily Wood, Carol Melville, Linda Gray, Russell Bright, Robert Alexander, Stuart Alexander, Andrea Coyston, Nathan Digweed, John Fitzgerald, Zoe Marsh and Tony Sewell. The flu epidemic resulted in cast permutations from performance to performance and both director Gill Watson and producer Vanessa Tester were called upon to take the stage. Gill handled the young members of the cast well. The costumes were beautiful and underwater settings colourful. The musical director and pianist was Claire Middleton, who does so much for musical shows in the town. The Players are aiming high next year. In April there will be Oscar Wilde’s brilliant comedy of manners The Importance of Being Earnest and, in July, that most sparkling of musicals My Fair Lady.
