Panto blasts off in rip-roaring style

The Guild Players opened the local panto season in rip-roaring style with Mother Goose. The show was dedicated to Dot Smith, the much loved veteran of many Deal productions who died earlier this year. Dick Turner’s direction was highly ambitious featuring a rocket taking off on stage as well as the traditional kitchen slapstick with an endearing Mother Goose (Peter Ryder) and lively Silly Billy (Paul Rutterford). Jo Carnell’s scarlet Demon Queen carried the action along with some panache and managed to link up a plot which is a bit weaker than some of the better known pantomimes. However, it was a strong moral message which means that not only does good triumph over evil but we all learn that money (or golden eggs) doesn’t buy happiness, which is the big finale number. All the music was accomplished and enlivening featuring solos from Sue Watson and with a very talented and very young drummer, Ryan Martin, keeping everyone on the beat. Strongest performances among a largely talented cast were from Lei Cobb and Stephanie Young as the broker’s men. The Guild make their usual friendly invitation in their programme for new members to join them.
