Cast of Blithe Spirit

Tickets go on sale next week for The Guild Players’ summer production of Noël Coward’s most successful comedy Blithe Spirit. The Players last performed the play in November 1968 and this time it can be seen on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 10th 11th and 12th, at 7:30pm at The Kilshawe Theatre in Deal. Blithe Spirit was written in six days in 1941 while Cowards was on holiday. It opened six weeks later at Piccadilly Theatre, London, and was directed by the playwright. It proved to be a great success and ran for more than four years in London. Sir. Winston Churchill, it is said, laughed so much he went back and watched it a second time. Blithe Spirit went on to be staged on Broadway, was made into a film in 1944 and a CBS television series was screened in 1956. The return for this timeless comedy after some 29 years is being welcomed by the Players, said Paul Rutterford, publicity officer for the Deal-based group. The play revolves round Charles Condomine, played by Dick Turner, who is haunted for his selfishness by the ghosts of his two former wives. Charles uses a medium Madam Arcati, alias Stephanie Walmsley, to get rid of the wives, played by Lei Cobb and Jo Carnell, by staging a séance. Also appearing will be Elaine Fitzsimmonds, Christopher Sewell and Bettine Walters. The Players’ chairman Christine Eyden is making her debut as director and Gill Watson returns as producer. Tickets at £3 or £3.50 are available from the St. George’s Hall box office from 11am to 3pm, from Thursday July 3rd. Group bookings are welcomed, with a discount available for 10 or more. Spirited View of Coward Classic

Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit played for three days at The Kilshawe Theatre and further enhanced the reputation of The Guild Players, particularly when presenting classics of the theatre. The curtain rose on a delightful setting representing the living room of a cottage in the heart of Kent during the early 1940s. Hairstyles, costumes, make-up and props were all carefully researched in Christine Eyden’s warm direction of this well-loved play. Richard Turner, as Charles, showed that by now he has become a master of his craft. Suave, debonair, he slipped perfectly into the role of an author whose unwise dabbling with the occult led him into trouble with his two wives, one living, the other deceased. Jo Carnell was wickedly sensual in the role of the ethereal Elvira who was later reluctantly joined in her spirit world by the petulant Ruth, sensitively played by Lei Cobb. Stephanie Walmsley, one of Deal’s premier character actors, brought lively humour and an air of dignity to the role of Madame Arcati. Christopher Sewell was the sardonic Dr. Bradman, competently partnered by Bettine Walters as his elegant wife. Elaine Fitzsimmons displayed comic flair for her not inconsequential role as Edith the maid, although perhaps she needed firmer direction to help tone down her performance to be more effective dramatically. However, there was little to fault in the presentation. It was an immaculate production, hugely enjoyed by the audiences.
