Naked Truth Provides More Laughs Than Lust

Imagine the horror of seeing a naked painting of yourself on the front page of every copy of the Mercury. That was the shock experienced by Albert Perkins, played by Nathan Sewell towards the climax of The Guild Players’ production of Pull the Other One at the Kilshawe Theatre. But did his wife Muriel (Jo Carnell) care? Not in the slightest – her hubby’s portrait artist had won a national art competition, complete with large media acclaim. This was the hilarious final stage of a farcical hoot well worth the modest entrance fee. Albert’s battleaxe mother-in-law Boadicea Heptinstall is convinced her son-in-law is having a fling, first with Hilary Armitage (Mike Doyle), who turns out to be his ex-Army buddy, a bloke who takes a fancy to dressing in drag, and then art student Virginia Brown (Sue Watson). Poker‑stick hitting Boadicea is determined to collect the evidence to convince her daughter, and Albert, in the true tradition of comedy farce, is less than honest in explaining his innocent-enough escapades. And he amuses the audience throughout with his going‑round-the-houses way of not allowing Muriel to know he is posing nude for a female artist. Albert’s pal, Wilf Turner (Pip Piacentino), carries the can in one of the many twists by pretending it was he who posed. The Rev. Elijah Tims, played by Christopher Sewell, Nathan’s real‑life father, was an important addition to the performance, adding more laughter at the end with the revelation that Boadicea had posed naked for him in the 1950s. It was well worth the whirl and was another first‑class performance from the society. Gill Watson, who directed the play said It was enjoyed by everyone and the cast were a smashing group. We had a full house on Saturday and at all the performances, the audiences were roaring with laughter.
