Guild Players Thrill Audience

The Guild Players production of Deadly Nightcap, a well-known Francis Durbridge play, provided three nights of enjoyable entertainment. Curtain-up revealed a well‑designed set, a good start for new stage manager Wayne Pointon. Gail Pointon managed a large role well and convincingly displayed the distraught feelings of the wife being traumatised by the unfolding events. John Matthews, who provided good support, played her husband of murderous intent. Sue Watson was excellent as Kate Warren, she brought life and comic relief necessary in any thriller and her performance was, without doubt, the highlight of the evening. A varied interpretation came from George Elder as Geoffrey Curtis who played a brooding physical threat. Mary Kettyle as Lucy, Jeremy Swallow as Edward and Peter Ryder as Cliff all gave good performances in supporting the leading roles, with John Bailey, Sharon Sewell and Linda Mewes all making significant contributions. Directed by Christine Eyden, the tensions of the play were perhaps not brought out enough but the audience reaction at the end of each scene made it worthwhile. Prue Jamieson produced the show.
