Players Perfect Choice

Last week The Guild Players gave a very enjoyable performance of the Harold Brighouse comedy Hobson’s Choice in the Kilshawe Theatre. The play is set in Victorian Salford. Widowed Henry Hobson is kidding himself that he is looking after his daughters and running a successful bookmaking business, mainly from the bar of the Moonrakers. Mike Rivarno gave a powerful performance as the ranting Henry, raising spontaneous applause for his reaction when he realises his daughters have bettered him. Charles Bain-Smith gave a fine portrayal of the transformation of William Mossop from an inconsequential jack-in-a-box popping out from the under stage boot workshop into a forceful entrepreneur in his own right, and Sharon Sewell was excellent as daughter Maggie without always having a sufficiently strong voice for the dominant daughter. Justine Sewell and Debbie Pinfold (Daughters), Mary Kettyle (Mrs Hepworth), John Bailey (Timothy Wadlow), Tony Sewell (Jim Heller) and Paul Hilton (Fred Beenstock) gave sound support. Duncan Currie was the appropriately forceful Edinburgh trained Dr. MacFarlane, Patsy Grant the whimsical Ada Figgins, and David Carter a delightfully over the top lawyer, Albert Prosser.
