Cider with Rosie

Duncan Currie as Laurie Lee, Debbie Pinfold as Mother & Jonathan Howlett as Loll

This adaptation for stage presentation of the famous autobiography of Laurie Lee necessarily requires large passages of narration. This could present difficulties, but when the highly talented Duncan Currie undertook this very demanding role of the Narrator, success was assured. In addition to memorising the long passages without needing a prompt, he maintained the Gloucestershire accent and provided vocal light and shade as well as pleasing modulation, so that at no time did the narration become monotonous. As Narrator, he was, of course, Laurie Lee. As Loll, the young Laurie Lee, Jonathan Howlett played this part with great sincerity and charm. Debbie Pinfold played the mother with varying emotions but always displaying resolution and verve. Her portrayal was successful in spite of the fact that it was difficult for her to be convincing when she was so young as to appear to be a sibling of the family. Sabrina Smith played several parts but excelled as Rosie. Caroline Venner also played several parts but showed the greatest versatility in portraying Granny Wallon and Baroness Von Hodenburg. Linda Mewes was good as Granny Trill. The minor roles were suitably cast and the simple scenery was satisfactory with mime being particularly effective. At times, the background music added to the atmosphere. A delightful evening’s entertainment!
