The Yeomen of the Guard

Cast of The Yeomen of the Guard

Over 250 Gilbert and Sullivan fans braved the cold sea breezes last Monday to watch Tony Kilshawe’s production of Yeomen of the Guard – aptly staged on Deal’s Tudor castle battlements. And they were rewarded by an extremely polished performance. One of the more serious, nonetheless popular, operettas drew from the talents of Deal’s dramatic and operatic societies. Victor Jones and Arthur Laffar expertly reproduced the dialogue and music, to which the cast mimed, and timing was excellent. The voices of actors and singers were so neatly teamed that is was almost impossible to discern the difference. The cast’s ready adaptation to the unusual setting and the lighting and wardrobe helped to make it a five-star performance.

Yeomen on Parade at Last

The spectacular pageant, Yeomen of the Guard, was permitted by the weather to make its first appearance on Monday. Just fewer than 300 people congregated in the castle paddock to see the colourful costumes of the characters mime at Deal Castle, to the reproductions of Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous opera. This is the second pageant to be performed out of doors and the weather is always the greatest problem. In spite of the rather cold winds however, still the crowds gather.
