Christmas with St. Francis
Nativity Play at St. George’s

St. George’s Church Drama Guild gave two performances of a Nativity Play, Christmas with St. Francis, by Freda Collins, at St. George’s Parish Hall on Tuesday and yesterday (Wednesday). The play was in two scenes with a procession and tableau at the end. It showed the life of St. Francis, his surroundings, and his kindness. At the same time it brought in the birth of Jesus at Bethlehem, and told how St. Francis led the village people to Bethlehem to see him. Costumes by Clare Bradshaw, and make-up by Kathleen Philpott, were excellent, and the four monks looked most realistic, with sackcloth habits and beards. Special credit is due to the scenery and backcloth painters. The two backcloths, one of the market place and the other of snow covered countryside, created a good impression, and the backcloth of the countryside provided a contrasted background for the crib scene. The hard work of painting the backcloths was the work of Miss. Mary Riches and Mr John Varney. Mr. Phil Casey was stage manager. The play was well linked together by humming a 14th Century tune, and readings between scenes. The tableau at the end was well arranged, and the idea of having a little boy angel suspended in the air on a swing was most original and added a professional touch to the tableau. The producer was Conrad Sherwin, who also managed to play two parts – a splendid effort. Hymns and prayers were taken by the Vicar (Rev. L W Hart, M A). Proceeds from the play, after expenses, will go towards the Church of England Children’s Society, who are going to look after 100 Hungarian children and 30 Hungarian families.
