Beauty and the Beast

Cast of Beauty and the Beast

The Guild Players at their own Little Theatre, Deal, relived Beauty and the Beast, the wonderful old fairy story on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Directed by Tony Kilshawe, the play was about a wizard, played by Julian Grenville, who, with his magic, punished a young prince, Peter Eckersley, for his rudeness, by locking him in a magic castle on his own for 20 years. But Hodge, the Wizard, forgot all about the incident for 500 years! By then he had really changed into a beast. So when Hodge went along to the castle to apologise to the Prince, or should I say Beast, things were made a little hot for him. Unless the wizard could produce a pretty young girl, the beast would kill his dragon nephew, played by Sheila Porter. This is where Beauty, played by Carol Smith, came in. She agreed to look after the Beast, but it was not long before she began to feel homesick, in that lonely old castle. The Beast reluctantly let her go home, but said that if she did not return in a week, he would die. He nearly did die, for Beauty’s sisters, Jessamine (Linda Jewson) Jonqueline (Susan Cresswell) did not want their elder sister to go, and they lost the magical ring, which transported her to the castle. However, Beauty reached the Beast just in time, as in all fairy stories, and he changed from the Beast to his old original form – a Prince, and all were happy. Quite an amusing little play, which seemed to go well with the audience. Rest of cast: Cocky-Olly, Martin Catt; Mr Clements, a merchant, Henry Riley; Shadows, Brenda Smith, Marion Emes, Bernadette Baugh and Molly Boyce.
