Marital Mix-Up Leads to Laughs

A marital mix-up based on the new morality was the foundation of the plot for the comedy Relatively Speaking presented by The Guild Players at the Astor Theatre, Deal, at the weekend. A pair of men’s slippers under the bed makes Greg, played by Gregory Holyoake, suspicious that Ginny, who he is living with, has got another man. When Ginny, Linda Jewson, goes to see her parents for the day Greg decides to follow her. The other couple, Philip and Sheil, played by Tony Kilshawe and Doris Cohen, are becoming disillusioned with marriage. They are not Ginny’s parents and when Greg arrives – he gets there before Ginny – this leads to the mummy and daddy of a mix-up. This is complicated even further when Greg asks if he can marry her – Ginny. Philip, thought by Greg to be Ginney’s father, believes that Greg is asking to marry his wife as he does not say who her is. Ginny was in fact coming to try and stop Philip lavishing his attentions on her. Through numerous twists the truth comes out and the play ends where it began – with the slippers. A very smooth performance that kept the attention of the audience throughout. Particularly of note were the excellent sets that made the stage look considerably larger than usual. The play was directed by Tony Kilshawe, with Colin Taverner as Stage Director, Mollie Fitzgerald, Molly Bryce and Martin Catt as Stage Managers, Reuben Atkinson as Front of House manager, lighting and Effects by Arthur Laffar, wardrobe and make‑up supervisor, Joyce Jewson, scenery built by Reuben Atkinson, Tony Kilshawe and the Company and décor by Charles Jennings and Tony Kilshawe. Association and locally made handicrafts were on sale with a raffle drawer between acts. The play was presented in aid of the Guide Dogs for the Blind.
