Success Continues

Author Philip King takes a peep behind the scenes of a fun-factory – a seaside repertory theatre – in his play On Monday Next, the choice of The Guild Players for Theatre ’70 at The Astor Theatre. Tony Kilshawe, who also takes the leading role as theatre producer, directs the play. As always, Tony is in sparkling form as an irascible character, who finds the perfect foil in the placid creature, an elderly lady, created by Dorothy Whitelock. Peter Eckersley shows a real understanding of comedy with his performance of a juvenile lead, and Conrad Sherwin is successful with his caricature of a nervous author. Norman Smith presents a brittle stage manager, and there is a well-drawn married couple, highly temperamental and sophisticated, from Pat Rowlinson and Henry Riley. Andrew Lawson, Gill Watson, Kate Sherrin and Marain Emes each portray fairly well known stage types, to give the play variety, although by no means adding to its action. On Monday Next continues tonight until Saturday and next week The Deal Dramatic Society will open with a double bill.
