This Show What Amateur Theatre is all About

The Guild Players packed ‘em in last week with their sparkling performance of William Douglas Home’s comedy The Secretary Bird at their Little Theatre. Not only was the demand for tickets such that an additional performance was staged, but all houses were at capacity and the final night had the Front of House putting in additional seats. And such was the performance of the Players no one came away dissatisfied. The Secretary Bird is a sophisticated comedy of manners and local audiences reacted well. The play was expertly cast, with every one of the five performers at their very best. The lines are humorous throughout and the direction of Tony Kilshawe was as light as a feather to suit the frothy mood of the piece. Tony Kilshawe has seldom been better than as the highly successful author faced with the prospect of a runaway wife. He was the kingpost of the production. Diane Almond played his wife beautifully. This accomplished actress revelled in the brittle situations and revealed her perfect sense of timing. Peter Eckersley was brilliant as the other man, a young stockbroker. He is another member of The Guild Players who has delighted local audiences over many seasons. A new face emerged in the production: attractive Jacqueline Cox was the secretary bird. She had a stunning first entrance and some good costume changes to make considerable impact. She revealed her capabilities in giving some depth to a character, which William Douglas Home had only lightly drawn. I hope Tony Kilshawe will give Jackie more opportunity in a new production. Finally a word for Mollie Fitzgerald, as the domestic. What a joy she was, and how she deserved her applause! A gem in miniature. The production was in aid of Deal Centre for the Retired, and was one of the most successful in recent years. It is what amateur theatre is all about!
